Short Summary: Major Thomás follows the story of a young Thomás Muñoz and his dreams of one day traveling in space. He grew up the son of a migrant farm worker and dealt with a lot of hardship from a harsh and difficult upbringing. With the help of his life long friend, Lisa Rodriguez, and his mother, Amelia Muñoz, he was able to persevere despite the overwhelming odds by seeing his mother’s own drive and work ethic on the farms which he used as inspiration to achieve his dreams.

Thomás was selected to be the youngest astronaut ever and the first to attempt hyperspace travel to Kepler 452-B, and that's where things go horribly wrong. Thomás ends up in the middle of an intergalactic war. I'll leave it there for you to read the rest.

"A Mexican-American farm worker becomes a NASA astronaut and just as his dreams begin to blast off, he gets lost in the middle of a space war, marooned with crushing regret about his life choices. With a forward by Astronaut Jose M. Hernandez, Major Thomás is an inspiring hero’s journey for young people around the world. “La Bamba meets Lost in Space meets Guardians of the Galaxy.” – Omar Morales

A side note, Jose M. Hernandez is the inspiration behind the 2023 Film A Million Miles Away starring Michael Peña

Analysis: I really, really enjoyed the book. Both from a pop culture standpoint and from my own inside knowledge of the creative team, I noticed lots of cool Easter eggs which are cleverly embedded and which won't pull the reader out of the story. It's a unique all ages tale that anyone will enjoy. Also from a representational lens, it's definitely exciting to see a story about latin characters which showcases the talents of an all-latin creative team. It's really important to me to have a positive presentation of latin people beyond those involving cartels and border crossing stories. I love seeing aspirational characters in fiction of latin descent in comics. The more stories we get like this, the better the medium can be in the long run as more people see themselves in them. If any of that interests you, you can pick this up on Kindle/Amazon for an insanely low price. With most comics coming in at the $4-5 price for just 22 pages, you’re getting an insane deal for 128 pages at $7, functionally a graphic novel for an oversized floppy price. Also if this follows the same path as other Comixology Originals, it might be available in print from Dark Horse Comics, Mad Cave Studios or Ablaze Comics in the future and I definitely would buy it in physical format as well should it eventually become available to add to the bookshelf.
