I first encountered the first two issues of The Family Graves a few months after launching Comic Book Yeti. Tim was one of the first indie creators to reach out to me for a review. It was such a cool experience – here I am, maybe with a hundred followers, and someone wants me to read and review their comic!
I remember loving it. It's an all-ages comic about a family, but it's fun and exciting and approachable. It's not the dull, sterile and safe stuff you might associate with media meant for the whole family. This had monsters and mystery and heroics, but at its heart was this familial bond. I put a mental reminder in my head to read this to my kids once they were old enough to sit still for more than a few minutes at a time.
That's why it's so cool seeing this, almost a year later. It's the culmination of a lot of time and hard work on the part of the entire creative team. And the world they bring to us feels full and vibrant and alive. There's a little something for everyone in this book. The cast of characters may be monsters, but they're grounded in humanity – it's easy to imagine yourself as a part of their family.
The press release below says all this more eloquently than I can. Needless to say, The Family Graves is one of the most enjoyable all-ages comics on shelves. Now, without further ado, ComicBookYeti.com exclusively presents the official announcement and cover art.
Source Point Press and Comics Experience are proud to premiere the cover for THE FAMILY GRAVES, Vol. 1, FIERCELY FAMILY, the upcoming trade collecting the first arc of the hit indie series described by Phil Hester as “a satisfying combination of The Incredibles and classic Universal monster films.”
The all-new cover, featuring dazzling art by series artist Brian Atkins and colorist Juancho, invites readers to jump into the first four issues just in time for Halloween. Releasing in October, and in the August edition of PREVIEWS for preordering, the trade also includes never-before-seen variant covers by Joe Eisma, Megan Levens, Lorenzo Lizana, and Robert Atkins along with pinups by Drew Moss and Craig Rousseau, early character designs, and more.
THE FAMILY GRAVES is equal parts horror, heroics, humor, and heart:
When a dysfunctional family of monsters discovers a set of magical mirrors and the dark power they hold, they race across dimensions to capture the mirrors and prevent a chronal vampire from devouring the space-time continuum and destroying reality. But can the werewolf dad, medusa mom, teen siren, fish-boy, and adorable baby zombie stick together long enough to keep reality from falling apart?
Timothy Bach’s fun, adventurous script blends science fiction and a love of classic monster movies to create a supernatural tale with heart. At its core, this is a family story—primarily about fathers and sons—dressed up in the teeth and claws of a marvelous monster story.
The artwork of Brian Atkins brings the bombastic high adventure and fantastic elements of this world to life while delivering quiet emotional moments of struggle for these all-too-human monsters.
