4 COLOR LOW-DOWN: Weekly Comics News 3/19/25

Writer: Doug WoodDoug Wood

Man, life huh? I have nothing to do for months and then I get a phone call out of the blue with an offer for an appointment I had been waiting on for 6 months. Glad to get it, but recovery is just kicking my butt. What a mess. Let's not even take time to tell jokes this week and just catch up on all I have misses. Sorry, folks. What Wood You Do is on hiatus this week as I am busy with launching a Kickstarter. (Will not be linked here as a punishment for missing weeks)

NEWS

The hotly anticipated new series from Image Comics is You'll Do Bad Things. Creators Tyler Boss and Adriano Turtulici are dipping their toes into the slasher genre. They are telling a tale of meta horror as the story follows a one time best selling real crime author struggling to produce a follow up until every thing he tries to write becomes gory reality.

Peep this in shops March 26th.

Next up we are rolling into Oni Press' new series Dark Regards from creators Dave Hill and Artyom Topilin. The set up to the story (which they state as being true) is so wild I have to let them tell it: "A few years back, I sat down in my underwear late one night and decided to let my obsession with Norwegian black metal run wild by emailing a Norwegian black metal record label, telling them all the bands on their label sucked despite the fact that I had never listened to any of them, and suggesting they sign my extremely extreme black metal band Witch Taint, which had yet to record any music and didn't even exist beyond the band name I'd just made up on the spot,” said Dave Hill. “This first email led to months of correspondence with the record label that I never intended for anyone to see. But the Internet being the Internet, eventually a lot of people saw it and things got nuts..."

Check your shop for issue 1 on May 13th.

Returning to Mad Cave under it's Maverick imprint is Tiger's Tongue by Olivia Stephens and

Diansakhu Banton-Perry. They are telling a story of a clan with familiars needing their princesses at the cusp of adulthood to step up and lead their people to a revolution.

I am uncertain if the press release is correct on release date as it says it released last month. Is that right? I have not heard back from the publisher at press time. Will update if I hear otherwise.

I came back just in time to cover this wonderful book again. IDW is collecting Godzilla: Skate or Die in trade paperback. The story is about 4 Australian skateboards who made the sickest DIY skatepark...well until giant monsters showed up.

I don't need to pitch this to you. You get it or your lame. Buy this book April 29th.

CROWDFUNDING Round-Up

This was recently posted in the Yeti discord and I cannot stop staring at that wonderful art and gorgeous coloring. The Stranger is a Noir/Mystery Superhero comic created by Tom Philipson, James Patricks, and artist Devlin Baker. In 1975, New York, a detective is trying to solve a murder of a superhero. His suspects are 7 individuals all living on the top floor apartment block.

Issue 2 of Winston Gambro and Jon Westhoff's LCS has arrived on Kickstarter. A post apocalyptical tale of scavengers in the waste land looking for the most precious resource at the end of civilization...comics!

13 days remain on this campaign and the fellas need some help to reach their goal.

Freshly launched Lost Lake by Lesly Juilen and Bugra Butahan Berah are slinging all the B movie horror you can peer your eyeballs on. Story follows 3 college students taking a break after mid-terms and taking a girl's trip to recharge. Too bad their is a serial killer hiding out! (Note: I was allowed to read an early version of this script)

This campaign has 22 days remaining and is nearly at half of it's funding goal.

Comic Jam alumni Daniel G. Wilson has a folk horror anthology rocking on Kickstarter. The Zona Del Male anthology features creatives all around the globe sharing in the weird, the wild folklore that connects humanity.

Only 11 days and their goal has been met!

The sequel has arrived! Steve Urena and Sergi Domènech bring Zombie Date Night 2 to you. "When their survival group realizes they’re running out of food, the enthusiastic and outgoing Ginger leads the charge with a very reluctant Jack to find sustenance before the zombaes (zombies who can only survive with a mate) eat them first. Will the second date be better than the first or will this situationship be food for the undead?"

Half way to it's goal and 26 days remaining!

I covered The Warden issue 1 and missed issue 2, so you know I need to make that up with issue 3! Matthieu Pereira is drawing the hell out of this pulpy comic. "In the gritty heart of Detroit, Henry Hunt has embraced his role as The Warden, a relentless vigilante on a mission to protect the city from its darkest threats. But his crusade comes at a cost, as he’s hunted not only by Emma Summers, an investigative reporter hungry for the truth, but also by Detective Matthew Cabello, who’s determined to unmask the city's elusive guardian. Yet, the stakes escalate when two mysterious federal agents, Mills and Hitch, arrive, bringing a ruthless determination to end The Warden’s reign, no matter his heroic intentions. With Detroit as his battleground, Henry faces obstacles on all sides, each with their own agenda, pushing him to his limits."

Lastly, we can do what we do every week and cover another Kat Calamia and Phil Falco release. This time the duo is releasing the collected The Dancer with artist EV Cantada. The story is about the titular dancer facing the trauma of her parents dying in front of her as a child. Throw in a splash of martial arts and you have a kick ass brew of a comic.

This book has not yet reached it's goal and has only 21 days remaining.
